Update from the Vet

Midnight tested negative for heartworm, Lyme, and Erlichea (sp?)--- rock and roll!

Monday, April 27, 2009

Our boy is HOME!

I picked Midnight up from the PG shelter and we went straight to the vet. He seems to be in fine shape-- a little underweight but not as much we expected, considering he's been eating who-knows-what for a MONTH! The vet did pull somewhere between 20 and 30 ticks off of him; he's being tested for heartworm and lyme, but we are thinking he's going to be okay.

He is sitting at my feet acting like a shepherd as I write this. All night he's been acting like he hasn't been gone at all, or more like, "Hey guys, what took you so long!?"

There will be pictures to come- promise! For now I'm busy cooking up some chicken and rice to fatten Bubba up!

Many many thanks to everyone who helped-- flyering, making calls, just thinking positive thoughts--- it's all very appreciated. We still really can't believe he's home. Unbelievable.

FOUND!

Midnight has been found!

Today marks the 1-month anniversary of Midnight's adoption, too.

Turns out Midnight has storm phobia. He got himself to Upper Marlboro, MD (or had some help getting there) and during the thunder storm on Saturday night, he tried to crawl into someone's house. The folks called animal control, and Midnight basically crawled into the officer's lap . . . the officer has visited Midnight at PG every day since then.

Midnight went to the vet today.

Thank you all so, so much for your help with this search! Pictures to come!

I hope, I hope, I hope

We're getting reports that Midnight may be at the PG shelter . . . but they are closed today, so we won't know for sure until tomorrow. We think it's about a 90% chance that he's there.

So, until tomorrow . . .

A New Neighborhood!

Thanks to some SERIOUS pet sleuthing by Irene, we've nailed down Midnight's new neighborhood-- Marshall Heights, SouthEast. The area is a mile or two northeast of Ft. Dupont Park. Irene was in the area today after 2 possible sightings and she found several people who had seen Midnight. BINGO!

The school (CW Harris Elem) security guard said that she has seen Midnight the past 3 mornings between 7 and 730. Charley and I can't make it down tomorrow, but will be there on Friday morning hoping for some luck. This weekend we will be down talking to neighbors, spreading the word and hoping to recruit people willing to try and lure Midnight into their fenced yards.

We would of course love some help. We are trying to get food and flyers down in the area. If you can help with either, please let us know!

Tons of new sightings

We have tons and tons of new sightings--details to come. Midnight seems to have left the park area and moved toward the CW Harris Elementary School. Are you near that area? Can you help us flyer there?

Thanks!

We need help

We have good news and bad. The good news is that we're getting some sightings of Midnight. The bad new is that he's still wandering around so we're playing catch up to figure out where he is. We need help getting more flyers up in the new areas where Midnight has been seen, and we need help setting up and monitoring feeding stations as we go.

Can you help? Know someone who can help? Want to help us raise funds for the search? We'd love to hear from you!

Please leave us a comment if you can help!

Thanks!

Possible Sighting?

Got a call from a Sherice in SE this evening; she said she thought she saw Midnight on Saturday night, around 10 or 11 at 53rd St. and E St., SE., down the street from CW Harris Elementary School. She said she saw a dog that was "black on top, brown on the bottom" walking with another dog (brown). She said he was walking fine and looked calm, but like he was sniffing for food. She said she couldn't see if he had a collar on-- too dark.

This could be Midnight- near the other possible sighting. The case against it being him is that it was too dark for her to make a real description; also, from what we know of Midnight, he does not like the company of other dogs. But that was the domestic Midnight, not Feral Midnight.

We need to get some flyers up in that neighborhood. If anyone can help this week or weekend, please let me know (srmcneil@gmail.com). Charley and I can't get down to SE tomorrow at all, and Thursday is iffy. Friday we can definitely do and of course the weekend.

Fingers crossed!

2 Possible (Probable!?) Sightings!

Received a call from a school kid at Dupont Park Seventh Day Adventist, which is right across Massachusetts Ave. from the park. She thinks she saw Midnight this morning and said her friend(also spoke to) saw him earlier in the week, also in the morning. They both described a black dog with brown feet (friend said brown on chest as well) sniffing calmly around the park side of Massachusetts Ave.

This could be our guy!

Flyering Event Sunday at 1:00 pm!

Hi Everyone,

We will be fliering on Sunday in the neighborhoods surrounding Ft. Dupont Park. We haven’t had a sighting in over 10 days and need one to get the search headed in the right direction. The streets that directly border the park have been pretty well fliered, but we will probably replace those with the new signs that say Midnight is STILL lost.

It would be great if you could join us, we need as many hands as we can get! Let me know if you are coming and I can email you the flyer. Feel free to call (301-785-9778) if you arrive late and need to meet up to get flyers/get an area assignment.

Where: Meet at the turf football/soccer field at 800 Ridge Rd., SE Washington DC 20019

When: Sunday, April 19, 2009 at 1:00 p.m.. Come at any time after that if you can't make it at 1:00 exactly.

What: Flier the area and search for Midnight.

What to bring: 50 copies of the latest flier (I can e-mail it to you, or we will print out extras to give to you when you arrive), 50 plastic sheet covers (to protect the fliers from rain). 50 thumbtacks to hang your fliers (or a staple gun; we have extra staples). Stinky treats, like hot dogs or cat food. A leash. Water and a snack for you. Feel free to bring friendly dogs too (Midnight is apathetic). Midnight is incredibly shy and will mostly likely head in the opposite direction if you see him, but it won’t hurt to have these things on hand.

What to wear: Wear comfortable walking clothing and a red shirt or jacket so we can easily identify you as part of the search team. Plan to stick a flier on the back of your shirt.

Before you come: Please send your cell phone number to Sarah at srmcneil@gmail.com

Thanks!
Sarah and Charley

Flyering Event this Weekend!

We are planning to have a flyering event this weekend in a push to get a new sighting. So far we've fliered the neighborhoods immediately around the park--- it seems like it's time to cast the net wider. Stay tuned for more details (i.e. date and time) coming VERY soon!

Community outreach

Today we reached out to area places of worship, asking them to post Midnight's flyer. We're getting worried since we haven't had a sighting in a week, so we're pursuing all options for getting the word out!

If you can help spread the word, please let us know!

Thanks!

Flyering update

We were out flyering this weekend and flyered the major roads that border the park. We also handed out business cards to folks who were out and about and we really hope to have a sighting soon.

Thanks to all who helped this weekend!

Permanent Park resident?

Midnight seems to be becoming a pretty permanent resident of the park. Good news is that it limits the searching to that area, the bad news is that the park is 300+ acres. Midnight is afraid of traffic and people, so the park w/ a guaranteed water source and bountiful garbage to scavange probably seems like a good place to him.

The last time Midnight was spotted was Sunday afternoon near the park amphitheatre, which is near the intersection of Minnesota and Massachusetts Aves (see map). The problem is that we do not have flyers at this end of the park yet. In fact we discovered this morning that all our flyers along Ridge Road (the other end of the park) had been removed.

If anyone is going to be AT ALL in the vicinity of the park and could put up even a handful of flyers, that would be incredibly helpful. I can email you the flyer we are using; we are trying to figure out a way to get back down there and hit the western edge of the park, but haven't picked a time. I think once there are flyers on the western end, we'll find that the sightings pick back up.

Midnight is lost!

Midnight, a Greater Swiss Mtn. Dog mix, got loose from his new adopters in Anacostia, DC (adopted from Lost Dog and Cat Rescue). They are trying to get him back, but need help. He has been spotted 4 times since Saturday, roughly in the same spots. He is hanging out in Ft. Dupont Park. The adopters need an extra-large humane trap, cameras, and assistance both with flyering and monitoring feeding stations and traps. Please let us know if you can help!
